New procedure for bunions
October 12, 2019 – In an interview with FOX 29 Good Day Philadelphia, Dr. Jason R. Miller, at Premier Orthopaedics, was recently asked by the host how Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction™ is different from traditional bunion surgery.
Dr. Miller stated that Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction™, “essentially addresses the problem at the true apex of the deformity. And, rather than simply shaving a bump this [Lapiplasty® Procedure] actually shifts the entire metatarsal bone over into the correct position. It doesn’t just allow for a cosmetic result, but a functional result.” Which for someone like his extremely active patient Jill (who joined him on the morning show) is an “absolute must.”
Bunion pain threatened to stop his 63-year-old marathoner patient, Jill Extract, in her tracks. But, Jill relates that, “less than four months after the Lapiplasty® surgery, I did my first five-mile race [post-op].”
Now, 9 months post-op, Jill says she feels “awesome” and is relieved that she did not have to give up her passion; running.
When asked whether a bunion is just an ‘aesthetic thing’, Dr. Miller shares that “over time, if people ignore bunions long enough, the joint starts to adapt to that abnormal position and people will develop true arthritis pain at some point. Modifying shoewear … and use of orthotics can help relieve pressure on a bunion, but ultimately these just don’t solve the problem.”
